As a national and state certified Physician Assistant and Breast Sonographer, April brings a contagious passion for advancing awareness and education regarding women's health.

It is important to pick the right health care providers who are there for you when you have breast concerns.

Self-breast exam

25% of breast cancers are detected on self-breast exam.

Check lymph nodes

Enlarged lymph nodes can indicate an issue in surrounding areas (like the breasts). Check underarms and collar bone areas as well as neck.

Connect with a good support group

Early detection

This saves lives. Mammograms remain the gold standard for detecting breast cancer.

Mammogram

It is important to know what your breast density category is. The categories are A, B, C , and D.

Mammograms

Digital or 3D mammograms may be available in your area

Breast ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is used when appropriate in addition to mammogram

Breast MRI

Breast MRI is another useful study when used appropriately.

Breast implants

Breast implants are "pushed back" with imaging. Imaging is safe if you have implants.

Breast biopsy

A breast biopsy may be necessary for further evaluation of breast abnormalities noted on exam or images

Breast pain

Try to reduce breast pain by using a moist heat compress, a warm shower, eliminating caffeine, wearing a comfortable fitting sports bra at bedtime and trying an anti-inflammatory. Ask your doctor before considering recommendations.
